The efficiency of a gas turbine can be improved by passing the exhaust gases through a heat exchanger in order to heat the air before it enters the combustion chamber. A water injection system sprays water from jets (10) into the exhaust duct before the exhaust gases from the turbine (TG) reach the heat exchanger (RA) which pre-heats the air from the compressor (CA) before it enters the combustion chamber (CC). Thus during aircraft take-off the safe operating temp. of the heat exchanger is not exceeded.
