The artificial straw is made of a crystalline thermoplastic polymer material, which animals can eat without ill effects and which has a breaking extension of >=50%; it is made into strips, within certain specified ranges of dimensions. The strips may be straight or spiral, and rectangular, oval or half-round in superficial shape and/or cross section; they may be pleated or crinkled. A large number of polymers are suitable; they may hold a variety of additives and may be foamed or laminated.
