Antibiotic AV290(I) was prepd. by Streptomyces candidus NRRL 3218. Antibiotic AV 290-alkylsulfate was obtained by pptg. I as its very slightly sol. alkylsulfate complex, preferably from the filtrate of completely fermented mash. This complex was itself an effective growth promoter. Thus, feed contg. this equiv. to 5ppm of I was given to dayold chicks, which after 2 weeks showed an average gain in wt. of 4.6% over the control.
