Cold-formable moulding compsns. (A) consist by wt. of 70-97% inorganic hollow spheres having bulk wt. 900 g/l and grain dia. 1 mm. 1-20% alkali silicate in aq. soln. and 2-29 polyisocyanates having b. pt. >150 degrees C/l Torr. Mouldings, having isotropic properties and wt/vol. 1000/g are made by moulding (A) opt. after adding water and further additives, and hardening at room temp. or with heating, opt. under pressure. The mixts. and articles can be used for insulation, e.g. building blocks; as binders for pumice, expanded clay or organic foams; as mortars or as building parts, acoustic tiles, cover plates, wall units, filters, laminates; as carriers for perfumes and biological materials; as floats, fillers and joint filling materials; as fire-resistive and insulating fillers or sealants for cables, pipes, doors and safes; as paints; furniture material or semi-finished, workable material. The mouldings are light, strong, heat-stable and resist water-uptake. Polyisocyanate addn. reduces water-absorption in water. Silicate addn. improves resistance to deformation on burning above 350 degrees C. The mouldings can be worked, machined, coated, enamelled, lacquered and metallised. |
