Fuel injection nozzle opened by fuel pressure - uses fuel pressure acting in opposition to external pressure applied to free piston

A fuel injection nozzle is used. It has a closure needle (1) which is opened by fuel pressure in opposition to a spring (4). The opening of the needle is also opposed by a piston (6) subject to an external fluid pressure. The piston is freely movable between fixed abutments (9, 10) and is abutted by an extension (5) of the needle when the needle opens. The external pressure may be regulated to control the opening and the closing action of the needle in response to selected engine parameters.
