An isotopic optically pumped CF4 laser is capable of producing coherent radiation at approximately 628 cm<-1>. As shown in Fig. 4, an off-axis pumping signal 42 is applied to an optical pumping cavity having an inner reflective surface 46 for containing the pumping signal within the cavity. A partially reflective mirror 50 and a grating 48 mounted in Littrow form the optical cavity for enhancing oscillations at approximately 628 cm<-1>. In another embodiment, Fig. 1, a Brewster prism 10 is utilized to spatially separate coherent radiation 14 generated by the isotopic CF4 gas and the pumping signal 12 to facilitate injection of the pumping signal into the optical cavity.
