The forging tongs suitable for handling workpieces with cone or tapered ends are on a holder (6) with the hinge axes located perpendicularly to the plane of the tongs movement. The longer arms of the tongs (2) are fitted with jaws (15) hinged on the arms by joints (35) with axes parallel to the plane of movement of the tongs. The gripping surfaces of the jaws (15) have a triangular notch (24-26) with its axis perpendicular to the plane of movement of the tongs and also perpendicular to the axis (35). This arrangement of the hinge axes and/or orientation of the notches on the jaws makes the tongs suitable for gripping tapered workpiece ends.
