The parting mechanism is for strips of material having alternate thick and thin sections, and includes a cutter and thickness measuring unit controlling the transport rollers. A clamping mechanism fits round the strip (1) at a point after the measuring unit (7), its gap being varied (19) by the latter. The minimum value is slightly greater than the thin part of the strip, and smaller than the thick part. The clamping mechanism can be mounted before or after the cutter (2) and the transport rollers (9) can have a roughened coating.
