1,204,987. Esterification. MELLE-BEZONS. 9 May, 1969 [12 June, 1968], No. 23877/69. Heading C2C. In a continuous process for the preparation of esters with a boiling point above the component acid and alcohol, the raw reaction mixture of ester, alcohol, acid and water from the esterification vessel is fed to a distillation column having two separate sections one to dehydrate the mixture and the other to separate the ester. The ester separation section is heated at the base and the vapours from the top are introduced to the base of the dehydration section and the ester separation section is operated at a pressure above atmospheric, e.g. up to an absolute pressure of 3500 mm. Hg, and the dehydration section is under a pressure not above atmospheric, e.g. in a range 100 to 760 mm. Hg, both pressures being measured at the top of the respective sections. Ester and water are withdrawn from the top and base of the appropriate sections and vapours from the ester section are introduced to the base of the dehydration section and part of the tails from the dehydration are returned to the esterification vessel. Apparatus is described for use with a solid catalyst, e.g. an ion-exchange resin, and a non- volatile liquid catalyst, e.g. sulphuric acid, and in examples, methoxy ethyl and ethoxy ethyl acetates are prepared. |
