ADDITIVE USEFUL IN OLEAGINOUS COMPOSITIONS

A process fro preparing oxazolines and compositions thereof with metal salts, which comprises reacting a substantially saturated hydrocarbyl-substituted C4-C10 dicarboxylic acid or anhydride or ester thereof having at least 50 carbon atoms in said hydrocarbyl group with a 2,2-disubstituted-2-amino-1-alkanol having 2 to 3 hydroxy groups and containing a total of 4 to 8 carbon atoms of the formula wherein 5 is alkyl or hydroxyalkyl, said alkyl groups having 1 to 3 carbon atoms, and at least one of said X is a hydroxyalkyl group of the structure-(CH2)nOH where n is 1 to 3, said reaction being carried out in the presence of a small amount of a metal salt. The products of the process are useful additives in oleaginous compositions, such as sludge dispersants for lubricanting oil or gasoline. The presence of metal salts particularly zinc in the compositions can contribute performance benefits thereto.
