1424724 Curable copolymers HOECHST AG 14 May 1973 [15 May 1972] 22794/73 Heading C3P Copolymers curable with alkali are formed from (a) 50-95% of a C 1 -C 20 alkyl ester of acrylic or methacrylic acid, (b) 0-40% of a monomer whose homopolymer has a second order transition temperature of - 40‹ to 150‹ C., (c) 0À1-10% of a vinyl haloalkanoate of the formula R<SP>1</SP>R<SP>2</SP>XCOOCH = CH 2 in which R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> are hydrogen or C 1 -C 5 alkyl and X is fluorine chlorine, bromine or iodine, (d) 0À1-10% of a C 3 -C 8α,#-unsaturated carboxylic acid or a partial ester thereof with a C 1 -C 20 alkanol and (e) 0-10% of a monomer of the formula R<SP>3</SP>CH = CR<SP>4</SP>COOCH 2 CH 2 CHOHR<SP>5</SP> where R<SP>3</SP> is hydrogen, methyl or -COOR<SP>6</SP>, R<SP>4</SP> and R<SP>5</SP> are hydrogen or methyl and R<SP>6</SP> is hydrogen or C 1 -C 12 alkyl. The polymers are formed in an aqueous medium at a pH of 2-3 which is adjusted to 6-12 after completion. The products are used as coatings, adhesives or binders and especially as pressure sensitive adhesives. In examples monomers, used are (a) 2-ethyl hexyl acrylate or a mixture thereof with methyl methacrylate, orlauryl methacrylate, (b) acrylonitrile or styrene, (c) vinyl chloroacetate, bromoacetate or iodoacetate, (d) acrylic acid, (e) hydroxypropyl methacrylate, hydroxyethyl methacrylate, methyl, 2-hydroxyethyl maleate, hydroxyethyl crotonate, or 2-ethylhexyl, hydroxyethyl maleate. |
