A device is used to indicate the position of a float or piston within a hollow cylinder in a level meter or similar instrument. It has a non-metallic ball-cage (6) containing a number of ferromagnetic balls around a circumference of the cylinder. A change in level of the piston or float, which carries a permanent magnet, causes the cage to roll up or down the cylinder wall to maintain alignment. The cage may be annulas, and completely surrounds the tube or cylinder containing the float. There is a second tube or cylinder concentrically surrounding the first, and this tube has a scale or graduated markings.
