The stand (1) of the machine contains a cam drive (3) to actuate gripping pincers (7) through a wedge-and-slot mechanism (19). A cam drive (4) reciprocates the pincer housing (6) and the carriage (9) on slideways (5, 8) by a toothed quadrant (21). Plates (14) are loaded sideways by a manipulator in slot (A) between the guides (12). Strips of foil reels (10) pass over the guides and are hot welded by the jaws (27) and severed by a hot wire cutter (28) between them. Similar welding and cutting mechanisms are arranged on the sides.
