A plate for use in the treatment of multiple rib fractures is attachable to the ribs without the use of screws and brings the rib ends into registry. The plate is made of implantable spring steel and has a profiled surface that grips the ribs while allowing the rib cage to flex during breathing. No prior modelling of the plate to the ribs to be treated is necessary and the operation time is thus shortened. The ribs knit together within three weeks and the plate can then be removed again. The plate is only 0.1 to 0.5 mm thick, while it is as long as necessary.
