The camera (1) is provided with an automatic focusing device (11) by means of which the range to a subject to be photographed is measured and the camera lens (2) is focused accordingly. The focusing device (11) has a predetermined measurement range inside which it delivers correct measured values for lens focusing. If, however, the lens focusing is arbitrarily adjusted to a range (9, 10) which lies outside the measurement range of the focusing device (11), the latter is either switched off or switched over to another measurement range. <IMAGE>
