PREPARATION OF XYLENOL

PURPOSE:To obtain 2,6-xylenol in high yield by alkylating phenol with methanol in the presence of a new catalyst containing chromium oxide and silicon oxide or boron oxide, thereby methylating the ortho position of the phenol selectively.
