Polyvinylpyrrolidone is prepared by polymerisation of vinylpyrrolidone in an anhydrous organic solvent in the presence of organic per-compounds. A heavy metal of atomic number 23 to 29 is added in the form of a complex or of a salt with an organic acid for use as a coactivator. The polyvinylpyrrolidone obtained can be used for pharmaceutical or cosmetic purposes, in particular for preparing polyvinylpyrrolidone iodide.
