In mechanical snubbers employing telescoping elements and an inertia mass actuated brake velocity sensitive brakes are applied to the inertia mass to increase its effect when the elements are separating or given velocity. Relative telescopic motion of a pair of elements 49, 31 is converted by rods 31-1, 33-2 and nut 33-4 into rotary motion of the internally supported braking mechanism comprising primary brake shoes 70 preferably coupled to increase mechanical gain and movable into engagement with said braking surface. A freely rotating first mass element 74 actuates said primary brake via pin 74 and has centrifugally operated brake shoes pivoted thereto at 76 actuatable at a given angular velocity to impede rotation of the mass element 74 and thereby increase and sustain the braking force applied by said primary brake shoes.

|
