<p>Licking block, for ruminants, contg. 1-60% of non-protein nitrogen, also contains a cpd. from concentrates from distillation of wine, by-products of wine-making and cider-making, notably sugars, glycerol, tartaric acid and its salts, tannins and anthocyanins. Consistency and hardness of block is improved to give correct supply of nitrogen to cattle, etc., e.g. is not >11.5 g/100 kg body wt. of nitrogen daily. Magnesium, present as hydroxide, salts etc., improves absorption of non-proteinaceous nitrogen. Citric acid present in the residues prevents deposition of insol. Mg salts; anthocyanins present have bactericidal, provitamin and antitumour properties.</p> |
