As the vehicle (40) progresses the road edges (13, 14) are continually monitored by two or more television cameras (18, 20) mounted on the vehicle. The images are produced in a set relationship to each other on a screen with the vehicle in a set position relative to the edges and keeping the images in a set position while marking is in progress. There may be a third television camera (16) centrally, mounted observing the road vanishing point, together with a device for placing the image centrally on the screen, with a straight road and the vehicle in the centre of it.
