The winding comprises winding sections arranged vertically between an inner and an outer insulating cylinder. Horizontal cooling paths for the cooling fluid are provided between adjacent cooling sections and inner and outer vertical cooling paths between the winding sections and the two insulating cylinders. Each winding section (5) is divided in subsections (5a, 5b) forming a winding section centre vertical cooling paths (21), each of which has a vertical through path (19) passing through the winding sections (5), and a branch path (20) providing horizontal cooling paths (6a, 6b) between the winding sections.
