<p>In the prodn. of a filling for beds, quilts, cushions, sleeping bags etc. from down, feathery down and/or half down, feathers and synthetic fibres, synthetic fibres are mixed with the feathery constituents. The synthetic fibres pref. are produced by breaking up a spinnable polymer melt (at 300-365 degrees C) emerging from a tube with a hot gas (at 300-400 degrees C), pref. so that it is drawn out to 1.1-3.6 my fibres by the gas stream. Pref. the synthetic fibres consist of polyaminoundecanoic acid ("Rilsan"; RTM) cyclohexane-1,4-dimethyl terephthalate ("Vestan"; RTM) or low pressure polyethylene. They are blown into the mixing chamber by the gas stream, opt. intermittently, and spread by high tensions. The synthetic fibres not only act as extender but also improve certain properties and also give a new property, the prodn. of electrostatic charge by friction, which is useful for treating rheumatic and arthritic patients. The process employs only one (continuous) procedure, instead of the 8 stages used formerly, and the prod. has a higher bulk.</p> |
