For utilisation at a steel rolling mill or similar, the cooling bed rotates a square section billet about its longitudinal axis during reciprocal horizontal displacements, deploying two types of differentially toothed combs acting with grills supporting the billets. The combs move relative to one another on vertical closed trajectories, the pitch of the teeth of the prim combs being double that of the sec combs. The teeth edges that rise in the direction of billet rotation may be between 30-45 degrees and between 3 and 7 degrees respectively to the horizontal the pitch of the teeth of the prim comb being 1.7-1.9times billet thickness. The sec. comb may have a fixed but reversible oval trajectory, certain grills being stationary and others having rectangular or circular trajectories.
