The invention provides, for a fragmentation warhead, a steel casing having lines of weakness therein formed by narrow zones of martensite along which the casing fragments on detonation. The invention further provides a method of producing such a steel casing wherein the martensite zones are formed by the action of a localised heat source e.g. a laser or electron beam directed on to the envelope surface of the casing. The invention enables the casing to be formed from a greater variety of steels than was previously possible. |
