Data carrier in the form of a disc provided with spiral grooves carrying the data in the form of optical or aural signals, has a circular base made of stainless steel, the base being provided before cutting of the spirals with annular edge and centre registering grooves. After prepn. of the base, the latter is provided with a Cu layer in which is cut the spiral groove. Cu layer may be deposited galvanically. Cutting modulated signals in a metallic layer leads to fewer faults than in known lacquer layers.
