The detector determines the optical characteristics of the stream by sensing a beam which has passed through the stream in a direction parallel to the flow. The stream may be broken by gas bublles. In order to prevent a reading from being taken while there is a gas bubble in the appts., the interface (20a) at which the light beam enters the stream is inclined w.r.T. the beam. The angle of inclination is such that if a gas bubble is in contact with the interface, the incident beam is reflected instead of passing through the liq. to the sensor.
