A pattern composed of octagons creates an optical illusion in that it can be interpreted in three different ways. The pattern is composed by beginning with the octagon ABCDEFGH with centre O and describing a second adjacent octagon of equal size ABIJK LMN with centre O1. A larger octagon AO1JPQRDO is then drawn in which the radii OA, OD, O1A, O1J of the first two octagons form four adjacent sides of this larger octagon. A fourth octagon equal in size to the third octagon is then drawn with a common side O1J. A fifth still larger octagon is then drawn and so on.
