The electronic device makes it possible to produce a transition of duration of the order of a millisecond between traction and braking or vice versa. It includes three parallel branches (7, 8, 9). The main branch (8) comprises a main chopper (13) as well as a traction thyristor (12) and a braking thyristor (15) which are on alternately for each of the functions and not simultaneously. For each transition, the main chopper (13) receives a blocking order of a duration of the order of one millisecond. Applications: DC traction motors with separate or compound excitation in the railway or road sector.
