The output from a reciprocating compressor can be varied whilst running at constant rotational speed. This is achieved by controlling the inlet or outlet valves (5, 7) by means of solenoids (9, 11) which are energised by means of an electronic circuit. The electronic circuit receives a signal from a transducer which senses the position of the crankshaft so that the opening of the inlet valve can be delayed after the beginning of the delivery stroke. Some of the gas is thus diverted back to the inlet pipe and so reducing the output.
