Foamable, undyed polystyrene beads are charged to a vessel with sufficient water to form an aq. bead slurry and with an alcohol-soluble dye. The vessel content is heated to >=50 degrees C, then cooled, and the ready-to-foam, dyed polymer beads are finally sepd. from the remaining content of vessel. Gelling of vessel contents is prevented. Dye penetration is even.
