<p>PURPOSE:To provide the subject sizing agent having high film-forming capability and excellent binder effect and containing an essential component consisting of a polymeric compound produced by reacting a polybasic carboxylic acid with a polyhydroxy compound obtained by the addition polymerization of an EO-containing alkylene oxide to an organic compound having two active hydrogen atoms. CONSTITUTION:An organic compound having two active hydrogen atoms (e.g., EG) is subjected to addition polymerization to an EO-containing alkylene oxide (e.g., simple EO) by conventional method. The obtained polyhydroxy compound having an average molecular weight of >=1,000 is made to react with a polybasic carboxylic acid, its anhydride or lower alkyl ester. Thermal decomposition is liable to occur in the above reaction and, accordingly, the reaction should be performed in a closed vessel. A compound having a weight-average molecular weight of as high as >=20,000 can be produced by this reaction. The glass-fiber sizing agent containing the above high- molecular weight compound as an essential component has, in addition to the above characteristics, excellent effect to suppress the fluffing in fiber-forming process, smoothening effect and antistatic effect. Furthermore, the agent can be easily decomposed with heat in the degreasing process and almost completely removed at a low temperature.</p> |
