A process for producing molasses pulp having a higher content of dry substance (which assists preservation) than is achieved using known methods, which process reduces the energy used for drying comprises pressing beet slices after sugar has been extracted by aqueous extraction, adding high dry substance content (e.g. over 50%) molasses to the pressed slices and then pressing the slices again. The molasses absorbs some of the liquid from the slices and becomes diluted. This diluted molasses then has its dry substance content increased either by multistage evaporation or by mixing with molasses which has been centrifuged, and is mixed with the pressed slices. This process may be repeated one or more times. The pulp may have added thereto inorganic substances for improving pressability, acidic molasses for preservation, or single cell protein or urea to improve food value. |
