A filtering appts. for carrying out separation by permeation comprises a vessel subdivided by membranes into a number of cells. Electrodes adjacent to the ends apply a voltage across the vessel, the first membrane starting from one end is permeable to cations and impermeable to anions, while the last membrane is neutral, that is permeable to both cations and anions. An intermediate membrane is a filtering membrane to create filter cells within the vessel. The liq. is circulated under pressure through the filter cells. Used for electrodialysis and for demineralising a soln. continuously supplied through the cell. More specifically, it is useful in sepg. the constituents of protein solns. The appts. suitably includes an anisotropic microporous polyvinyl membrane.
