A gas stream bearing particles which are to be separated flows into the interior (10) of a filter insert (7) which rotates about the axle (8). The particles are deposited on the inner surface of the insert (7), and the pure gas passes on via the line (4). The insert (7) is in sealing contact with sealing strips (22) of a fixed housing (1). In the housing (1) there are a plurality of blower apertures (6) which extend over the height of the insert (7) and through which air flows from the outside to the inside. These air streams impact on the outer surface of the rotating insert (7) and blow the layer of particles deposited on the inner surface of the insert (7) away such that said layer of particles drops down into a collection compartment in the interior (10). The device can serve for cleaning exhaust air in industrial operations, but can also be used in a conveying device for powders. <IMAGE>
