Pot-shell for electrolytic aluminium reduction cell - with stiffeners disposed against walls which act as cooling ribs

A potshell for an electrolytic cell comprises a bottom plate, side walls and end walls formed of steel plates. Vertical stiffenesss are disposed against the exterior of the side walls and a reinforcing frame surround the stiffness. Vertical, free air passages are provided between the stiffness and walls and the stiffeners act as cooling ribs for conducting and dissipating heat from the walls. Used for electrolytic reduction of aluminium placing of the resinforcing frame clear of the potshell sides results in only small thermal stresses and maintenance of low temps. The air currents are guided in towards the sides of the potshell. The vertical stiffeners offer little air resistance and prevent accumulations of alumina building up along the sides of the potshell.
