For the preparation of trans- DELTA <2>-prostaglandins of formula I a compound of formula XIII is reacted with a compound R<5>R<6>NLi to produce an Li esterenolate in the alpha position, which is reacted with benzene selenenyl bromide or diphenyl diselenide or a dialkyl or diphenyl disulphide, the -OLi group is then hydrolysed in order to convert it to -OH, the selenide or sulphide group is oxidised with hydrogen peroxide or sodium periodate and the resulting product is decomposed to produce I. The latter can be hydrolysed in acid medium to produce
