The bale collector is fitted to the front loader of a tractor. At least two bales with their longitudinal axis in the direction of travel are collected by the implement, which then travels to the next bale, on whose end side, the front end of a middle element of the collecting implement engages. This element is then moved forwards and swivels the bale through 90 deg. to form a layer with the first two bales. A mirror-image further layer which is transposed by a bale width is formed in the same manner and finally both layers are stacked on each other.
