The generation of sound by the instrument is controlled by an operating and/or playing panel, and the tone is determined by tone pitch and colour generators. Contacts and points (4) for voltage tapping are arranged in a grid on the playing panel (2). When they are closed or touched, tone(s) of certain pitch and colour are generated. The contacts and points are so arranged on the panel (2) in rows and columns, that tone pitch varies in one direction, and colour in the other. The playing panel is square or rectangular.
