Process comprises intimately contacting the fluid with a cellulose fibre deriv. which has been obtd. by completely carbonising cellulose fibres by heating them with the exclusion of O2, the fibrous structure being retained. More specifically, a cellulose fibre deriv. of carbonised cellulose fibre woven fabric has a tearing strength of 0.5-3 kg/cm, a specific surface of 900-1400 m2/g and an electrical conductivity in the direction of the weave of 10-25 ohm/cm2. Used partic. for removing O2 from air or other gas which is to be breathed by human beings or animals.
