Process for the preparation of 2-aminoimidazoles

The alpha -aminoaldehydes of formula V are prepared by hydrogenation and hydrolysis of the corresponding alpha -aminonitriles, and the 2-aminoimidazoles of formula I are obtained by reaction of the alpha -aminoaldehydes of formula V with cyanamide. In the formulae, R and R1 are hydrogen or a substituent. The products of formula I are useful for the preparation of the corresponding 2-nitroimidazoles which are known antimicrobial agents. <IMAGE>
