The potato planting machine has rotating planting belts, with scoops and a supply hopper whose base is formed by a circulating conveyor belt which extends into the scoop area. There is a sensing device in a chamber which connects with the conveyor belt and thus regulates the thickness of the potato layer delivered by the belt. On exceeding a predetermined layer thickness, the sensing device stops the conveyor belt drive. The sensing device (39) acts on an electric motor which drives the conveyor belt (16). The electric motor (20) is connected to the lights circuit of a tractor.
