In order to save as much space as possible in a pickling installation for pickling metal strip, a vertical pickling-screen zone (7) having baffle plates (12, 13) is provided. The metal strip (6) passes through the channel formed by the baffle plates while being subjected continuously to pickling fluid before plunging into the bath (5) of pickling fluid present in a pickling tank (2), where it runs over deflection rollers (8, 9) before leaving the pickling tank (2) horizontally via an outlet opening (22). Provided in addition to the pickling tank (2) is a collecting tank, from which a feed pump pumps pickling fluid continuously into the pickling-screen zone (7). Pickling fluid flows into the collecting tank over a dividing wall situated between the pickling tank (2) and the collecting tank, an upper pickling-fluid level (40) being defined thereby. <IMAGE>
