The present invention provides a herbicidal composition comprising 1, a bipyridylium salt and 2, a thiocarbamate having the formula wherein each R and R1 is a lower alkyl group or together with the nitrogen atom to which they are attached form a heterocyclic ring; R2 represents a group of the formula and X represents a halogen atom or a lower alkyl group; and n is 0, 1 or 2. The herbicidal composition is effective for the foilage treatment and soil treatment of weeds in agricultural land such as orchards, upland fields and paddy fields and also in non-agricultural land.
