A synthetic polymer having a glass transition temperature Tg (NMR) of less than 25.degree.C. and a log Rs of less than 8 wherein the polymer is selected from the group consisting of aliphatic N-alkyl polycarbonamides, aliphatic polyesters, and polyetheresters containing up to 50 mol percent of phosphonium sulfonate groups based on the total moles of carboxylate components in the polymer.
