The filter system for purifying waste air containing radioactive substances comprises heapable or pourable contact material (2), for example active carbon, as a moving bed. The waste air flows through at least one vertical moving bed (2) contained in a filter chamber (1) through which flow can take place and chambers permanently flanged onto the filter chamber are present for the inflow (3), outflow (4) and deflection (5) of the gas or air stream to be purified. The object is to increase the residence (dwell) time of such filter systems in nuclear power stations and to ensure an adequate filtration efficiency for radioactive iodine and iodine compounds over prolonged operating periods. This object is achieved by providing a heating device (33) for heating the gas or air stream (11) in a chamber (5) in every case where flow has taken place through a filter stage. <IMAGE>
