Decomposed oil and petroleum pitch are obtd. from a heavy petroleum oil by supplying the oil heated to 450-550 degrees C, to a reaction vessel, and blowing in a large amt. of superheated steam (500-800 degrees C) to carry-out the thermal decompsn. The improvement comprises adding 5-200 ppm of a dimethylsilicon-bearing foam-retardant to the heavy oil to be supplied to the reaction vessel from the bottom, so that the foam-retardant is rapidly and uniformly dispersed in the feed, so that the foaming of the feed and the decomposed oil are suppressed. The foam-retardant is pref. supplied to the reaction vessel together with the heavy oil from >=1 supply inlet at the bottom of the reaction vessel, inclined downwardly 5-15 degrees to the horizontal.
|
