Double effect separator to remove solids from gas streams - uses cyclone and filter, with the filter having a by=pass valve and passage if damp materials liable to clog the medium are handled

Solid particles suspended in air or other gas streams are removed by a system having a coarse separator (e.g. a cyclone) banked up by a fine separator such as a bag filter. Each has a collection space for the sepd. solids. The filter consists of a series of cylindrical sleeves suspended between mounting plates. The unit has an inlet shaft which takes the air to the base of the sleeves and allows it to flow upwards through them. The solids are deposited on the inside and are removed by a shaker mounted on the top. The clean air collects in a shaft on the side and is extracted by a fan. The bottom of this shaft connects with a bypass valve at the base into the dirty air space. The clean air inlet to it is via a pinch valve. When the latter closes and the bypass opens, the flow through the bags is stopped. The device is esp. used with large boring machines to prevent environmental pollution. Existing systems have a tendency to clog up esp. when handling damp material, necessitating a complete shut down. The construction gives a simple means of overcoming this problem.
