The degree of dissociation of ammonia in a steel nitriding furnace is kept constant by feeding at least part of the NH3 contg. gas to the furnace via an ammonia cracker, which is controllable by measurement of the ratio PNH3/PH2 1.5 which defines the nitride potential, the sensor being located in a closed second cycle and the sample gas being returned to the furnace. Method reduces the consumption of NH3 and permits a control of the dissociation inside the furnace atmos. without having to change the constant mass ratio of ammonia to C contg. gases.
|
