Compounds of the formula <CHEM> (wherein R<1> represents an alkyl group containing from 1 to 8 carbon atoms, optionally substituted by a hydroxy, etherified hydroxy or acylated hydroxy group; R<2a> represents a hydrogen atom or a carboxyl esterifying group; n represents 0 or 1 and salts thereof and processes for their preparation. The compounds of formula (I) are useful as antibiotics or as intermediates for the preparation or purification of antibiotics. Intermediates of the formula <CHEM> wherein Z represents a halogen atom or a group (S)nR9 or -N RxRyRz. A<(-)> are also described.
