PURPOSE:To enable execution of high speed processing through prevention of lowering of a processing speed and generation of arc discharge, by a method wherein a rate of change in an electric discharging state between an electrode under discharge and an object to be porcessed is detected, the distance and the speed of discharge stability are automatically changed according to a processing state. CONSTITUTION:Although, usually, a gap between an electrode 1 and an object 2 to be processed is held at a specifeid value through the working of a servo mechanism, with the progress of processing, processing chips therebetween is difficult to remove, and arc discharge is increased so that, simultaneously with application of a voltage from a pulse source 3, a current is caused to flow. Meanwhile, an arithmetic unit 11 computes a rate of change in a signal for the number of arc discharging times from e voltage detector 9 at intervals of a specified time to feed a signal to a regulator 10A. The forced opening distance of discharge stable motion between the electrode 1 and the object to be processed is decided, and is opened through the working of a mechanism, e.g. a switcher 8, a drive device 7. A memory device 12 stores a previous relative position, and outputs a signal, by means of which a position is restored to the original after opening, to the regulator 10A. This constitution prevents lowering of a processing speed and generation of arc discharge by changing the distance and thc speed of discharge stability depending upon a processing state, and enables execution of high speed processing.
